Design & Screen:

Without physically getting my hands on the UMi Touch I can only speculate at the actual real-world quality of the screen but on paper, the 1080×1920 resolution at 5.5 inches diagonal width should produce a pretty crisp screen with a respectable PPI of 400. UMi have chosen to use quality screens for the UMi Iron Pro and the UMi Rome so I can’t think of any reason why the UMi Touch won’t follow this trend.

The design of the UMi Touch is very similar to an iPhone with a single metal alloy back plate. The good news is that UMi have chosen to use PPS material over the antenna which should keep signal strength high. Around the metal frame, you’ll find there is a CNC polished 45-degree edge which seems to be the trend in distinguishing phones as premium at the moment. UMi have also chosen to centre the camera (very slightly raised) and the dual flash on the back of the phone which adds to the symmetrical minimal design but the downside to this is that you’ll have to be finger-aware when taking photos.

Overall the phone looks fantastic but it won’t be winning any innovation awards as it’s very close to being a clone phone.

Finger Print Reader:

It’s great to see the addition of a front-facing fingerprint reader on the UMi Touch. The fingerprint reader on the UMi Iron Pro was accurate and worked well but the rear placement wasn’t ideal. I spend a lot of time with my phone on my desk, so a front-facing fingerprint sensor is a much better option for me although when on the move a rear sensor can be easier to use.

UMi claims the glass sensor will unlock the phone in around 0.1 seconds which is a three-fold improvement over their earlier fingerprint sensors.

Hardware:

The CPU is power-efficient and when tested in other phones runs apps and day-to-day Android processes with ease.

The storage included with the UMi Touch is a standard 16GB. You do have the option to expand on the initial 16GBs by using the onboard memory card slot.

Battery:

UMi have been clever with using a larger battery in the UMi Touch as poor battery life is a big issue for a lot of smartphone users. With Chinese phones leading the way with super large batteries it’s good to see a fairly hefty 4000mAh battery inside the Touch. See my comprehensive list of Chinese smartphones with amazing battery life. This battery is none-removable but the large size should see the UMi Touch lasting around 1.5-2 days of medium usage.

Camera:

At this point, there isn’t much information on the IMX328 and it hasn’t yet been added to Sony’s specification list. I’ll update appropriately as more information becomes available. We should only see improvements from the next generation of Sony smartphone cameras and better low light pictures.

I’m a big fan of front-facing selfie flashes so it’s great to see one included on the UMi Touch.

Final thoughts on the UMi Touch:

It’s too early to say whether the UMi Touch will be a big hit or not and with the UMi Iron Pro having very similar specifications but weighing less the UMi Touch has some stiff competition. I think the elegant albeit copied design of the UMi Touch coupled with the 4000mAh battery are very consumer focussed touches and will win a lot of people over. With the UMi Touch, it’s all going to come down to Price Vs Features.
